Decision 2: The Firefly
As Sable made his way out of the forest, the trees thinned and the path ahead became clearer. Along the way, he spotted a glass jar resting on a broken log. Inside, a single firefly flitted about, its colours shifting in a wide palette, before finally settling on a soft yellow as Sable approached. His eyes glanced around the forest, who could have left such as thing here? Sable peered into the jar as he considered his options.
○ – Open the jar, releasing the firefly.
□ – Sit for a while and study the changing colours.
△ – Take the jar. The firefly could be useful in lighting the path ahead.
Outcomes:
○
Sable unscrewed the lid with ease, the seal still fresh from its owner. The firefly flew out and circled him several times, now a luminous green and painting streaks of light in the air. Then, with a gentle flicker, it darted back into the heart of the forest, disappearing, leaving Sable alone once more. Yet he smiled, content in knowing he helped. On a dark day, as Sable neared the forest’s edge, hundreds of fireflies returned, their lights illuminating the path ahead, giving him company and hope.
□
The firefly flitted around the jar, its warm yellow glow shifting to a vibrant purple as Sable peered closer. A sudden crack startled him—a branch fell from a nearby tree—and the firefly’s light turned a sharp red. As Sable calmed, the firefly gradually shifted back to purple. He realised then the colours reflected his emotions. Satisfied with solving the mystery, Sable left the jar undisturbed for its mysterious owner to return. The firefly’s glow faded back to yellow—Sable liked to think that meant hope.

The firefly’s glow provided welcome light along the dark path, its colours shifting yet always returning to the warm yellow. As the forest canopy thinned and sunlight broke through, the firefly’s glow faded, dimming with every step. When Sable emerged from the forest, he noticed the firefly resting at the bottom of the jar, its light extinguished. He realised it could not survive outside the forest. With quiet care, Sable opened the lid and placed the jar beside a bed of flowers within the trees. He stayed a moment, reflecting on the fragility of life and the importance of preservation.
